[Article] Where Are the ‘Boys Over Flowers’ Stars Now?

Boys Over Flowers Cast

"Boys Over Flowers," the Korean drama remake of "METEOR GARDEN' was a very successful K-drama that had a huge following among Filipino drama fanatics. It is not a secret that "Boys Over Flowers" was a launching pad for many of its main cast including now-Hallyu stars Lee Min Ho and Kim Hyun Joong. Kim Hyun Joong's recent Manila visit inspired me to check where the other stars of "Boys Over Flowers" are now. Here's the result of my investigation.

Ku Hye Sun or "Geum Jan Di"

Ku Hye Sun or Goo Hye Sun played the much-loved feisty girl "Geum Jan Di" who won the heart of the wealthy chaebol "Gu Jun Pyo". If there is one girl who fits the tags "beauty and brains" and "overachiever", it is Ku Hye Sun. She is not just an able actress but is also an accomplished singer, composer, pianist, artist, author, and film director. After "Boys Over Flowers", Ku Hye Sun has released an instrumental album entitled "Breath", written a bestseller entitled "Tango", and debuted as a director of the short film "The Madonna". Her latest drama projects include the Taiwanese remake of the much-loved Japanese drama "Absolute Boyfriend" where she plays the lead role of "Lu Xiao Fei." Her upcoming Korean drama projects include "The Musical"and "Fly Again" both for the SBS network.

Lee Min Ho or "Gu Jun Pyo"

Lee Min Ho played the iconic role of "Gu Jun Pyo," the chaebol heir who fell in love with "Geum Jan Di" in "Boys Over Flowers". Lee Min Ho, now considered a Hallyu star, has successfully pushed his drama career forward after "Boys Over Flowers". The actor is currently one of the highest paid actors and product endorsers in Korea. After BOF, Lee Min Ho completed the romance drama "Perfect Match" or "Personal Preference" in 2010. In this drama, Lee Min Ho went against type and played a character falsely mistaken for a gay man. Lee Min Ho is currently enjoying the fruits of the success of his recently concluded action drama "City Hunter" based on the legendary Japanese manga by Tsukasa Hojo. Many of Lee Min Ho's fans were surprised as one of the biggest Korean showbiz stories last month was the confirmed report that the handsome actor is dating is "City Hunter" co-star Park Min Young ("Sungkyunkwan Scandal"). Lee Min Ho is currently completing yet another endorsement project with Girls Generation's Yoona for a French outdoor apparel brand Eider.

Kim Hyun Joong or "Yoon Ji Hoo"

Kim Hyun Joong, who played the unrequited lover "Yoon Ji Hoo," has also elevated his status from supporting cast to main cast. After "Boys Over Flowers," Kim Hyun Joong has conquered possibly all areas of the entertainment business including acting, singing and modeling. An undisputed Hallyu star, Kim Hyun Joong headlined the drama and Internet sensation "Playful Kiss" in 2010. He also completed two mini-albums with his idol group SS501 entitled "Rebirth" and "Destination". The star recently concluded an Asia-wide promotional tour including a Philippine stop for his first solo album "Break Down" and as the official spokesperson for Korean beauty brand "The Face Shop". Kim Hyun Joong expressed that his next projects include a new album due for release this October and an Asia-wide concert tour.

Kim Bum or "So Yi Jeong"

The cute actor Kim Beom or Kim Bum portrayed the role of playboy Casanova "So Yi Jeong" in "Boys Over Flowers". The baby-faced actor is also known among Filipino fans as the partner of Maja Salvador in a local RC cola commercial in 2009. Similar to his "Boys Over Flowers" co-stars, Kim Beom was also active in the modeling scene. After "Boys Over Flowers," the actor signed many endorsement deals. He appeared as a model for Andre Kim and was even hailed as the "Korean Ken" in the 2010 Barbie and Ken Awards. Kim Beom also appeared in various fashion magazine spreads for Elle Girl Korea. As an actor, Kim Beom completed a less-than-successful drama entitled "Dream" in 2009. In 2010, he participated as a supporting cast in the "The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry". According to his official Facebook page (which has more than 3.5 million fans, by the way), his next drama project is a Korean drama entitled "Padam Padam".

Kim Joon or "Song Woo Bin"

Kim Joon played the role of gangster's son "Song Woo Bin" in "Boys Over Flowers". Aside from his acting assignment, Kim Joon was also very active in producing the music of "Boys Over Flowers" as part of the Korean boyband "T-Max" which contributed several tracks in the official soundtrack including "Paradise", "Say Yes", "Wish Ur My Love", "Fight the Bad Feeling," and "Bang Bang Boom". After "Boys Over Flowers", Kim Joon was very busy with his music career. He released a solo single entitled "Jun Be O.K." featuring Kim Hyun Joong. Aside from his solo activities, his boyband, T-Max, also completed and released an album entitled "Born To The Max". Kim Joon also started graduate school early this year. Unfortunately for Kim Joon fans, the most recent report of his activities point to his impending military enlistment.

[News] Kim Hyun Joong; K-Pop Star Makes Fans Scream Again

South Korean pop star Kim Hyun Joong dropped by Manila last week to meet and greet fans. Around a thousand K-pop aficionados bought Kim’s debut album, Break Down, for a chance to meet the Korean heartthrob up-close and get a high-five.

The High Five Touch session of Hyun Joong with his fans is an event that started in Taiwan. The promotional event then continued in Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and in the Philippines, and in all those territories, the 25-year-old singer and actor has always been well received.

In the Philippines, as early as 9 a.m., TriNoma mall was not even open yet Hyun Joong fans were all agog to get inside the mall to purchase the CD, so they could have a ticket to meeting their idol. According to PolyEast Records, the local label that distributes the Break Down album, the original plan was to let 300 fans get a once-in-a-lifetime high-five from Kim but even before lunch over a thousand fans have already bought the album. The first 500 fans who bought the CD were lucky enough to exchange high-fives with the South Korean star at around 6 in the evening.

“Thank you for all the love you’re having toward me. It’s inspires me to bring up better songs and better performances,” a message to his fans, which Hyun Joong told the local press before he headed to TriNoma’s activity area.

Kim Hyun Joong is best known for his for roles as Ji Hoo and Baek Seung Jo/Gelo in the hit drama series Boys Over Flower and Playfull Kiss, respectively, and being the former leader of the band called SS501. He first visited Manila in June last year when he joined the K-pop boyband Beast in a sold-out concert at the Araneta Coliseum.

Kim Hyun Joong has just completed his tour both in the U.S. and South Korea a few months ago. Back in his home country, he hit back the studio and recorded the mini-album before embarking on an Asian tour to promote the solo project. During the press conference held at the Edsa Shangrila Hotel on Aug. 25, Hyun Joong said that he plans to have an Asian concert tour that will include Manila as one of the pit stops.

Rising Asian star

The release of Kim Hyun Joong’s debut album marks his growth as a music artist. He said that his independent status as a performer has opened new windows of opportunity for him and consequently, he expects to see some more opportunities coming.

Two weeks after the album’s release in Korea, the record has sold more than 100,000 copies. During the same period, the mini-album topped Japan’s music chart in the International imported Album category. In Taiwan, where Hyun Joong has a rapidly growing fan base, Break Down has recently achieved platinum record status.

Kim Hyun Joong sees his success as the product of displaying a different persona compared to his SS501 days. From the typical synthesizer instrumentals, heavy beats and bubblegum pop, his newfound artistic musical freedom focuses more on creating mature yet catchy sounds.

“This is a very personal project because I was hands-on in producing this record. I was involved in all the processes of the album, from the lyrics to the jacket design,” the singer-actor revealed.

Together with Japanese group, V6 and Kat-Tun’s producer Steven Lee, Kim Hyun Joong involved himself in the album-making just to reveal more of his talent as a solo artist. The solo album boasts six songs, with one instrumental version of the title track.

After the release of his two hit singles “Please” and “Break Down,” Kim Hyun Joong’s album is currently getting more attention as his latest track “Kiss Kiss” now heats up the airwaves. The track is a pop/dance song accompanied with an acoustic guitar and the song’s music video is now on MYX top charts.

Marking his comeback on the music scene, previously released single “Please” also sees Kim Hyun Joong portraying a different and mature image in his music video. The title track “Break Down,” produced by Ken Lewis (the same producer behind the hits of Eminem, Kanye West, Usher and John Legend), is a powerful synthesized song with an urban style that features a stylish rapping of South Korea’s Double K.

Other album highlights include “Intro (Let Me Go)” where Kim Hyun Joong opens with a magnificent pipe organ melody and the upbeat dance track “Yes I Will.”

When Kim Hyun Joong finishes the Asian concert tour, he’d be back on the small screen for a new series and a movie.
