Thinking back about the first encounter at work with Kim Hyun Joong, frankly speaking~ it was a memory of ‘mixed feelings’. Maybe everyone won’t believe it but the first time when I interviewed Kim Hyun Joong, I really had the ‘cold sweat pouring down’ or even ‘soul scattering off’ type of feeling. It’s not because I was too nervous, but it was this gentleman being ‘too involved’ (very involved in the interview)!

That was SS501’s first time to Taiwan, also the first artiste that TRENDY personally interviewed since first publication. In order to play a dutiful host, during the interview we almost moved a fruit stall, drink stall and a whole minimart over. Starting from bubble milk tea, each time I took out something all other members will cheer and fighting to try it out, then they will respond with a very satisfying look and wide smiles and kept saying it’s very delicious. Only Hyun Joong whom just quietly look on and occasionally nod his head slightly, I even suspect the person in front of me actually is not Kim Hyun Joong but [Jihoo sunbae], and is the one who is having bad mood! As I take out more tidbits my cold sweat also rain down profusely, because Jihoo sunbae~ no~ is Hyun Joong still has no expressions, until when I’m left with last two pieces of [treasure] and at the verge of my soul going to leave my body, with no more hope I took out a packet of cod fish snack, surprisingly at the next moment….[Jihoo sunbae] suddenly ‘left’….and Kim Hyun Joong is back! He suddenly flashed a brilliant smile, took the cod fish snack from my hand, and after keeping quiet for half the time, he finally started talking! Although his first sentence was: “Oh~ I ate this before, it’s very yummy, I like it.” Next up, not only just expressions and smiles, even his [4D soul] is all back! During the interview that day, he acted out a very classic [Sorrowful Backview], causing everyone at the film set roaring with laughter. That’s also my first time personally witnessing his 4D soul.

As the number of times I have contact with Kim Hyun Joong increases, slowly I realised that his 4Dness is not nonsensical or that he got a weird character, but coming from his [sincerity]. Because he is very [sincere] towards everything, thus naturally he replies with what comes in mind, without polishing nor beat around the bush. And because of [sincerity] thus very often when he is thinking about something, he will be immersed in his own universe (dazed out) and forgot to come out of it, when he remembers he need to come out of it, everyone has already moved into the next part already!

But it’s also because of his [sincerity] that we can see Kim Hyun Joong transform from [Jihoo sunbae] who had deep affection to become God of Battle [Shin Jung Tae]. His music is also multi-genre and diverse, a very manly 〈Break Down〉, 〈Unbreakable〉 to yuppie style 〈Lucky Guy〉, 〈Beauty Beauty〉 and fast melody 〈KISS KISS〉, 〈Let’s Party〉, 〈Gentleman〉 and even affectionate ones like 〈Please〉, 〈Your Story〉, 〈I’m Your Man〉……

If I’m to pick one genre that’s closest to the real Kim Hyun Joong? My answer is, every genre is the real him. If you think that all these multi-genre styles are enough to satisfy him? Actually not, everyone can listen to his latest mini album’s 〈His Habit〉 which is a collaboration with Lim Kim and Kanto, maybe then you’ll understand what I’ve said.

As for the 4D encounters that I’ve witnessed personally over the years, I’m afraid it would take thousand and one night for me to tell you. But there’s one which I’ve said quite a few times and I can’t make out whether to cry or to laugh, and that is [bubble milk tea]. It was two years after Mr Uzoosin’s first trip to Taiwan, and it was in front of me when he surprisingly discovered that bubble milk tea is not coffee but red tea with milk……only then that he started to fall in love with this Taiwan signature drink. Thereafter in one occasion, as he was drinking bubble milk tea and sharing with me that during the time when he had just finished filming [Boys Over Flowers], it took him a period of time to break away from the character. At that point of time I gave a resentful look~ I really can comprehend and told him that during the first time I interviewed him, how my soul almost flew away and in the end he……burst into laughter!

Ok! Even if he continues to be 4D till age of 80 and become 4D grandpa, I think everyone will still love him!

Many people asked, what is the most essential requirement for my current job?

Normally my first reply is: 「Keep Calm/Composed」. This is also what I felt most confident of and did very well. But this year’s summer, because of Kim Hyun Joong, I almost lost my composure.

Maybe it’s because from the first publication of TRENDY (magazine) onwards, began the irrevocable bond with Kim Hyun Joong, thus be it during SS501 days or when they went on solo activities, TRENDY is never standing at the position of 「cover」, but together with fans standing by his side, and unknowingly the time of 5 years had past~

Prior to Kim Hyun Joong’s Taiwan trip in July, despite the multiple hiccups, but I believed that placing Taiwan as the first stop for World Tour before his army enlistment, Taiwan must have spell a special meaning to him!

Frankly speaking before arriving at the concert venue, I felt that I’ve already prepared myself that after this concert it will be a long 「farewell」 for us and Kim Hyun Joong. In each and every song that he prepared with great care and performed at his best, moments of each partnership with Kim Hyun Joong in this 5 years kept flashing in my mind. Despite a few times when tears wet my eyes, I didn’t let the tears flow down, until when he sang this song which was recorded in his latest Korean album 《TIMING》 ─ 〈Say Something〉. That day probably is also the first time he sang this song on stage……

Maybe some might feel that the lyrics of this song is too sorrowful, and it’s also about the parting of a couple? But maybe everyone also noticed that day when Kim Hyun Joong was singing this song, there was Chinese translated lyrics showing on the stage. And it was in traditional Chinese. For a ‘tough man Kim Hyun Joong’ who will cringe when he is showing too much of his feelings, this is probably his best way to express his emotions?! That day~ he put in even more effort to speak Chinese :「I’m really～thankful to you all for coming to see me」、「I will come again next time!」…… This is probably also the one time that we heard him said so much Chinese in these 5 years! I think not just me but everyone had also received his kind thoughts.

Thereafter~ many people asked me, that night was there a few times where Kim Hyun Joong had tears in his eyes? Actually I’ve no means to answer, because the tears that I’ve been holding back for a long while had already blurred my vision.

I received an invitation from the record company today, hoping to share some stories of 「The beautiful times of Kim Hyun Joong and me」 with everyone, and so I started listening to 〈Say Something〉 again……I am reminded of the moment when my eyes turned blurry with tears, in future it will also be like the every moment in the past which will become beautiful moments! CN Blue's lead singer, Jeong Yong-hwa, is a talented man with a expansive stage presence and an abundance of energy. More often than not, however, this presence and energy doesn't find its way into Jeong's dramas. That makes his characters shaky. His more recent work has more finesse and relatability, but he started out quite rocky.

Jeong's first role was as the second lead in the 2009 drama "You're Beautiful". He had just debuted with his band CN Blue and was a rookie in every sense of the word. It is difficult for rookies to take on lead roles with no experience to fuel their acting. This was true for Jeong. Although he is winning on a concert stage and on reality television, it is quite another thing for him to take on the persona of another and be convincing with it. His Sin-woo in "You're Beautiful" went through the motions, but did not feel alive. Despite this, "You're Beautiful" was wildly successful and gave him a foot in the door for his next big television project.

"Heartstrings" gave Jeong the leading role and reunited the popular coupling between him and Park Shin-hye. Again Jeong's acting was rocky, but the experience he gained from "You're Beautiful"definitely showed, especially in the line delivery and the more relaxed body language. Jeong is an actor who learns a lot from experience.

This was shown in "Marry Him If You Dare" where Jeong was once again a second lead. At times Jeong was very convincing as Park Se-joo. It helped that he worked beside immensely talented and experienced actors who he could learn from and emulate. But there were still moments where his acting was visible. He wasn't Park Se-joo, but Jeong Yong-hwa acting like Park Se-joo.


In his upcoming drama "Three Musketeers", hopefully Jeong will show continued improvement on his acting so that his efforts remain hidden and the audience only sees the results.


Kim Hyun-joong

Idols often get unwarranted hate when they try acting. Even if not bad for the rookie actors that they are, the mere existence of their other profession gets them harsh criticism. Despite this being a sad reality, that criticism is sometimes valid. For people like Jung Yong-hwa and also someone like Kim Hyun-joong, there was really no justification to be made in the past.

Having gotten popular from his role in 'Boys over Flowers', Kim Hyun-joong also enjoyed drama fame very disproportionate to his acting level at the time. There is no beating around the bush. The man could not act. He could barely muster up a few expressions, he lacked charisma, skills and one would have to dig deep to find some potential, if any. Things did not look promising in 'Naughty Kiss' either, where his character's cold and nonchalant facade did not give him much more to put effort into.

Kim himself said that if he could not deliver on his next drama, he would quit acting. The drama which presented that opportunity was "Inspiring Generation". And this is where things took an unexpected turn. While nothing great or consistent, Kim showed great improvement in this series. He managed to be convincing and even engaging as the humble street fighter, Sin Jeong-tae.

This just goes to show that effort and study can go a long way. Kim took acting lessons for his cancelled drama, 'City Conquest' and he gave Jeong-tae his all. This is something those not born with natural acting talent can learn from, be they idol actors or other types of rookie actors. Hard work and challenging oneself can do wonders in making someone as good at their job as possible.

Kim Hyun-joong still has a lot to prove as an actor and needs the right projects and constant effort to do so, but at least he has proven progress is always within reach.

[Article] Kim Hyun Joong Says SS501 Reunion is Realistically Not Easy

Taking a cool swim in the hot and humid summer weather, Kim Hyun Joong talked a bit about his future and SS501 with style magazine, High Cut.

In a special video released through theHigh Cut application on August 5, Kim Hyun Joong swims freely inside a pool, surprising everyone with his impressive swimming skills.

He revealed that as a young child, he was traumatized after watching the movie Jaws, making him fear water. Even so, he earned six scuba diving licenses, perhaps in an attempt to get over his fear.

“I want to build a cabin in Jejudo and open up a scuba shop,” said the singer on his plans at age 40. “I don’t want to appear like an environmentalist, but when you look at the ocean from the outside, it’s beautiful, but on the inside, it’s disgusting. I want to get together with scuba divers and create a good culture where we can clean the ocean.”

Also during the interview, Kim Hyun Joong touched upon the future of SS501.

“I think about it, but it’s not that simple realistically,” said Kim Hyun Joong. “And fans can start getting false expectations based off of words that I simply threw around. Even though feelings might get hurt, I think it’s right to face reality.”

Returning to K-Pop with Round 3, Kim Hyun Joong revealed that his title track was not supposed to be Your Story.

During an interview with fashion magazine, High Cut, Kim Hyun Joong said he had to give up his original title song because of Psy. The reason was because the title song he wanted was also named Gentleman.

“It was a song that we’ve been working on since last year, so I was a bit greedy with the title,” explained Kim Hyun Joong. “But then Psy sunbaenim came out with Gentleman first, so we tried changing the title toSuperman and others, but it didn’t stick.”

He added that Gentleman ended up just being one of the songs on his new album.

“That’s why Your Story was born and it’s a good song, so everything worked out in the end.”

[Star of the Week] Kim Hyun Joong 김현중 the Man who Doesn’t Stop Giving

“I believe I should always be careful and act responsibly.”

These are the words of the 27-year old singer when asked about any prejudice or rumors about himself.

He stated that he didn’t think there was anything he needed to clear up, and he’s completely right, because Kim Hyun Joong has never really done anything to cause trouble.

In fact, Kim Hyun Joong is actually the exact opposite. His name gets put into headlines for all the good things he’s done for not himself, but for others.

Fans Donate in the Name of Oppa

Although the donation was not made by himself directly, it was Kim Hyun Joong that inspired his fans to do something good in his name.

Back in August of 2012, Kim Hyun Joong’s fanclub, ‘Kim Hyun Joong Powerful S. My Club’
donated a whopping 10 million won to the ‘Heartless Campaign.’

The ‘Heartless Campaign’ focuses on taking care of the elderly, especially those who live alone. With Korea’s summer being excruciating hot and humid, .the donations made by Kim Hyun Joong’s fans purchased 175 electric fans and 100 light weight summer blankets for the elderly.

Then in March of 2013, Kim Hyung Joong’s fans over in Japan also donated 11 million won to support Kim Hyun Joong’s Scholarship fund for students who need help with financial aid.

And then, don′t forget the overflowing amounts of rice wreaths sent in for each event that Kim Hyun Joong′s ever held!

One Good Deed Leads to Another

When someone does something so awesome in your name, it’s almost impossible not to be moved.

Kim Hyun Joong was so touched by the selfless actions by his fans that he was inspired to do his own kind act by donating 50 million won out of his own pocket to help those in need.

Kim Hyun Joong made the donation to the Beautiful Fund, which is where the fans also donated, where he was able to help out the elderly as well as provide scholarships to university students in need of financial aid.

It came as a surprise, as not many stars respond to their fans deeds in the way Kim Hyun Joong did.

Love Has No Boundaries

Just as the foreign fans have donated for Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Hyun Joong also spread his love to those in need out of Korea.

When Japan was hit with a terrible earthquake in 2011, many celebrities supported the aching country with words of encouragement and monetary support to rebuild what was lost.

Kim Hyun Joong felt the need to contribute, so he sent over 100 million won to help the citizens who lost everything.

His agency stated that Kim Hyun Joong felt terrible able hearing about the news and wanted to contribute to bring life back to normal. “Although [the amount] may be weak, he hopes that it will be some help to the people.”

He even specifically requested that the money get sent to people who really need it more.

Secretly and Greatly

From what we know about Kim Hyun Joong in broadcasts, he’s not the loudest person ever. He keeps to himself at times, making it hard to praise him when needed.

In 2011, it came as a surprise to his company, KeyEast when reporters started calling in about a donation Kim Hyun Joong made the Red Cross.

It turned out in the midst of promotions and preparations to work in Japan, Kim Hyun Joong had donated 50 million won to the Red Cross to support people who suffered in Thailand’s floods.

KeyEast, who later learned of the details shared that Kim Hyun Joong did not wish for his deed to be known to the public. “Only one manager knew. The majority of the people in the company did not know.”

In Action
While there is nothing wrong with donating financially, there’s just something extra heartwarming when you actually go out on location to help out.

Facing the winter’s sharp winds, Kim Hyun Joong bundled up and headed out into -10 degree Celsius weather to deliver coal with the food company he was the model for at the time.

Together with 100 fans, Kim Hyun Joong delivered a total of 20,000 coal briquettes to warm the houses for many people during the winter. The coal briquettes were a donation made by the food company and Kim Hyun Joong, who contributed 10,000 pieces.

Despite the cold weather, Kim Hyun Joong kept a bright smile on his face, warming everyone who passed him along the way.

The goal is to make a remark that your opponent won’t be able to respond ‘Of Course’ to, and Hwang Bo kicked off the battle by saying, “You think your face is prettier than mine, right?”

When it was Kim Hyun Joong’s turn, he poked fun at Hwang Bo’s tomboy mannerisms, saying, “Did you get that tan while you were in the army?” leading Hwang Bo to say “Why? Is it not sexy? I heard you like dark-skinned girls.”

Without missing a beat, Kim Hyun Joong then shot back, “But, you know I don’t girls I can’t see in the dark, right?” ultimately taking the win.

On Text Voting

After finding out that the text voting for the 2006 MKMF cost money, Kim Hyun Joong turned to SS501’s official website to talk with the fans.

He wrote about how he found out that the voting cost money and the total already gathered up equaled to an overwhelming amount.

“I’ve told you before, but I will enjoy the stage now. The rookie award may only come once, but I believe that if we try our best, we will be able to earn an even bigger award later one. Honestly, if you say an award is important, it’s important. But more than an award, I believe that the fun of seeing SS501 on stage, to play, enjoy, and laughter is much more important.”

Kim Hyun Joong asked that instead of voting, the fans just enjoy the stage that SS501 has prepared, since no amount of money could equal the memories SS501 will share with the fans.

Regardless of whether or not they received a trophy, we believe SS501 definitely won that night.

On Happiness
Traveling through Vietnam in excruciating hot weather, Kim Hyun Joong learned that he was a lucky person.

Having to find part time jobs to finance himself during the entire trip, Kim Hyun Joong came to this conclusion.

“I used to think that if I wasn’t a person who did this kind of work (being a celebrity), I wouldn’t be depressed. But through this experience, I learned that it’s the hardest to live a very normal life. I’m a really happy person. I am such a content person doing what I want to do, so I can’t imagine why I ever thought I was an unfortunate person.”

We have a lot to learn from this young man.

On Hospitality and Happiness

On that same trip to Vietnam, not only did Kim Hyun Joong realize the truth about happiness, he learned of the hospitality of the people that hosted the Barefooted Friends team.

At one point, Kang Ho Dong even became teary-eyed, being touched by how kind the Vietnamese people were, paying attention and taking care of the program cast and crew.

Kim Hyun Joong then quieted slipped in this quote:

”When people are happy, they become more generous.”

Kang Ho Dong then joked that Kim Hyun Joong’s tone of voice took away from the meaningful quote, but he later added that he will use Kim Hyun Joong’s quote when he has the chance.

[Article] Is Kim Hyun Joong 김현중 “Unbreakable?”

After two years, Kim Hyun-joong is back with “Unbreakable,” the pre-release MV off of his aptly titled third mini-album, Round Three. This is also the most masculine we’ve seen Kim Hyun-joong who is most famous to casual fans as that pretty boy from Boys Over Flowers. The MV is nothing like his previous lead track, “Lucky Guy,” and is reminiscent of “Break Down.”

The MV opens with two scenes: traditional drums and a horse which later transforms into a car. On first view, this MV is two things: visually confusing and hot. It’s obviously hot because of the performance of Kim Hyun-joong and Jay Park, who appears as a featuring artist. It’s visually confusing due to the array of art forms incorporated. We have a horse, a bull, a hawk, sword dancing, traditional Korean dancing, and someone painting a dragon. All this is inter-woven with scenes of Kim Hyun-joong dancing, Jay Park rapping, and some more scenes of Kim Hyun-joong dancing.

Closer viewing of the MV though makes sense of all these seemingly random and out-of-place elements. This MV makes use of heavy symbolism. The bull transforms into a Lamborghini whose logo features a bull. The horse transforms into a Ferrari whose logo is famous for featuring the horse. The dragon which is being painted has several meanings. It is a mystical animal known for giving good luck, and in Korea, the dragon also stands as a symbol of the king. The goblin, or dokkaebi, is also heavily used. It can be seen in the background, on Kim Hyun-joong’s chest and the person on the white horse also wears a goblin mask. The dokkaebi is a mythical being that appears in many Korean folktales and is associated with mischievousness, but is regarded as harmless creatures.

The MV features a unique mix of traditional Korean culture and new trends. On the traditional side, here is someone doing a tal-chum or mask dance, playing the traditional drums, a traditional painting, and two sword dancers (one of whom is Infinite Dong-woo’s older sister). On the more current side, there is break dancing and cars. There is also a particular scene where break dancing is combined with Korean ribbon hat dancing, or the sangmo.

That all these scenes are interwoven beautifully with the other scenes are a testament to the editing team because this MV is beautifully edited and fits with the color scheme which enhanced the overall feel of the song. It switched between the scenes in such a way that the MV did not become stagnant, so that the viewers would not get bored. But at the same time, each aspect shown was given an amount of time for it to be observed before going back to Kim Hyun-joong and his dancing.

The choreography shown is simple when compared to some other K-pop dances, but it is clean choreography. It enhances the beat and melody of the song, and Kim Hyun-joong executes it all perfectly. In addition, it seems as if the choreography played into the masculine feel that Kim Hyun-joong and his team seemed to be aiming for. Bonus points are given for that hat dance done during the first Jay Park rap break.

Jay Park’s rap breaks seems to be placed strategically as to give a quick change of pace to the song. They have a decent flow and did not overpower Kim Hyun-joong in any way, which is a good thing since he’s just a featured artist and there have been times in K-pop where the featured artist over shines the artist itself.

Fashionwise, it was very simple. There are no avant-garde outfits, no flowery suits, no neckties and stuff like that. It is very basic with tank tops, jackets, hats and a brief appearance of Kim Hyun-joong looking dashing in a white button down. His new hair might have had some people surprised at first, but his hair highlights his masculine features in a way his old hair never could have.

All in all, this is the first time I’ve been impressed with Kim Hyun-joong and I’m excited for the rest of his album and the title track. The only real negative thing I could say is that he wore a little too much clothes, a realization I had when the MV reached the 2:40 mark.

Kim Hyun-joong’s “Unbreakable” lives up to its expectations. Thank to all the K-pop deities that his shirt was not unbreakable.

For a pre-release MV, this was impressive with a 4/5.

In a recent interview with the fashion magazine @star1, Kim Hyun Joong got talking about prejudice and rumors, and said, "I don′t think there was anything I had to clear up myself."

He added, "I don′t really care even if there are rumors about me. I just think it′s good enough that I know they′re not true, and my fans trust me."

[Article] Side B: One Lucky Guy Named Kim Hyun Joong

Welcome back to another Seoulbeats Side B! This time, we’re covering Kim Hyun-joong, who is set to make quite the sultry comeback with a new Korean mini album,Round 3, his first Korean release in nearly two years.Round 3 is also his third mini-album, which is no surprise given the unimaginative title. On the other hand, his last mini-album, Lucky Guy, has a title which unintentionally happens to be an apt descriptor for the on-extended-hiatus-SS501 leader, because he really is quite a lucky guy for all the success he’s experienced flying solo.

Kim Hyun-joong is not the traditional soloist in the slightest. In fact, the only real strength he has to provide as a soloist is stage presence and general likability. Unlike most “pure” soloists in K-pop, Kim Hyun-joong is frankly not the most lauded singer. Soloists face a lot more scrutiny as singers than 95% of idol groups, which is pretty natural given the obvious need for soloists to be able to carry songs on their own.

Surprisingly enough, even with limited vocal power and range, Kim Hyun-joong manages to succeed as a solo singer, and I’m not even talking about it in the context of releasing a solo album or two in conjunction with group activities. I’m saying that he’s a good soloist, period—no asterisks or other stipulations. Indeed, that makes him quite a lucky man to become a popular Korean soloist with his less than average singing abilities; however, I don’t think that his rapid success isall attributable to luck, looks, and some Boys Over Flowers residual fame (though they most certainly played a part). In fact, Kim Hyun-joong’s repertoire is a great lesson on how singing to one’s strengths can make all the difference in the world.

While most soloists try to promote their “uniqueness” via their voice or their particular brand of pop music, Kim Hyun-joong, in many ways, takes us back to the basics. He sings unaltered pop music, and as a result, most of his songs are easy to groove to and instantly likable. The simplicity becomes a trait of wide appeal rather than a detractor because Kim Hyun-joong’s entire brand revolves around broad appeal. But what makes Kim Hyun-joong stand out the most is how he doesn’t push beyond his abilities to impress. Great pop music doesn’t need bells and whistles, just sincerity—and Kim Hyun-joong has plenty of it.

My favorite song from Kim Hyun-joong is a wonderful pop-rock number called “Your Story” from his first Japanese album, Unlimited. I’m really glad that he’s heavily promoting the pop-rock style in Japan; not just because I love pop-rock, but because of his vocal affinity for the genre. Hyun-joong’s vocals are plain and clean, perfect for bringing great instrumentals to the forefront and providing a smooth counter-balance to the harsher texture of the band. Generic construction aside, I love everything about “Your Story,” all the way to the flow of the lyrics. It’s simple, but it’s also a great song.

I might as well mention every Japanese original Side B on Unlimited, because they are all top-notch Kim Hyun-joong songs. “Save Today” is not nearly as good as “Your Story,” but this song also has the effortless pop-rock sound that works impeccably for Kim Hyun-joong’s mellow voice. It’s a tad on the repetitious and bland end, though I think Kim Hyun-joong can get away with it just because the song really fits his overall style.

“君だけを消せなくて” carries a lot of the same charm that “Your Story” has, but with a rock-ballad vibe. It’s a wonderfully smooth song, as well as one of the few songs in which I can really appreciate Kim Hyun-joong’s natural timbre.

“I’m Yours” (also from Unlimited) is a wonderfully made pop song, for it balances an addictive melody with modern finishes without ever letting the song fully explode. Hyun-joong’s vocals are weak enough that it would be so easy for the guitar, drums, and synth to run over him and the entire song — yet it doesn’t. In fact, the song embraces restraint so well that “I’m Yours” can easily be played in a loop without rapidly getting that grating quality from listening to the same song too much.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to ignore the Korean discography, because there are several gems scattered in there as well. While Kim Hyun-joong is relatively one dimensional in Japan, in Korea, his music certainly has more variation in genre. If you could condense the quote-unquote idol boyband music into solos (“Kiss Kiss” anyone?), you would get something pretty close to what Kim Hyun-joong offers musically, albeit a tad less bipolar in concept than the standard boyband offering.

“Please” is one of those classic pop songs that work to Kim Hyun-joong’s benefit. The song is carried by a great melody (and piano line) as opposed to the voice singing it. I bet nearly any singer in K-pop with a decent voice could sing the song and still sound great. “Please” has universal appeal and approachability, and it’s exactly that which makes it so great as a pop song.

“Smile” is also a gorgeous song, and probably the most unique offering from Hyun-joong. The song really has so much awesome going for it in terms of intriguing elements. The flute, the guitar, the vocals all meld together fantastically, creating an intense immersion that’s really better heard than said. Following all the little cadences in the song makes for a fantastic listening experience.

The first time I heard “The Reason Why I Live,” I honestly thought I clicked on the wrong video, because Hyun-joong actually sounded alive and passionate while singing a ballad. I don’t say that as subliminal shot at Kim Hyun-joong’s singing abilities, It’s really a comment on musical delivery across the idol-sphere. Many idols are privy to singing ballads with zero emotion behind them, because you don’t see them give any nuance to the words or care about how they sing each note. No, they don’t act like they’re reading out of a phone book, but whatever they do convey is a feigned emotion with no regards to the beauty of the song itself. (Singing with “fervor” the entire time does no one good.) Kim Hyun-joong avoids this trap pretty well in this song, so color me impressed.

That’s it for this week’s Side B, and I hope that this gave you a chance to re-examine Kim Hyun-joong’s music from the oft forgotten side of things. For a guy who has so much going for him in other avenues, it’s neat to see that he has some fantastic songs when he could easily get away with the highly mediocre on popularity alone.

Maybe that means that we’re actually the lucky ones.

Kim Hyung Jun, the youngest singer with the boy band SS501, has announced that he will sign up for military service next year. He will be the second member to enlist as bandmate Kim Kyu Jong signed up last year and will probably return around the time Kim Hyung Jun reports for duty. But before Kim Hyung Jun trades in his fashionable clothes for standard issue fatigues, he wants to make as much progress as he can in his career as a singer and actor.

According to a statement by his agency, Kim Hyung Jun is working extra hard to make the best possible impression before he reports for military service. And Kim is a performer who always works hard to make a good impression. As a result, his next near is sure to be a very busy one.


Kim is putting in overtime rehearsing for his role in the upcoming MBC drama, "I Summon You Gold!" In that drama he will play Mong Gyu, the brother of the drama's heroine. He's an unemployed happy-go-lucky young man. Kim is also slated to appear in an upcoming movie, "Actor is Actor."

Kim is not just known for his singing and acting, since he has been a disc jockey and television master of ceremonies. He's also known for his charitable work, supporting causes that feed the hungry, protect the environment, and help those with physical disabilities. His younger brother Kim Ki Bum is also an actor.
As the youngest member of SS501, he was the first to be called the maknae or junior member, a tradition that persists in kpop today.
