[Article] SS501 The Test of Hope ; The Kpop Life: Lesson From a Veteran Fan

The Test of Hope.

What are your hopes when it comes to Kpop? The global mainstreaming of the genre? Meeting your favorite artist in person? Seeing a Kpop concert? Traveling to Korea? We all have little hopes like these, but if you’re like me, you may also harbor a very important one: the reunification and comeback of SS501.

After their contract ended with DSP Entertainment in 2010, members of SS501 went their separate ways and signed with different labels. When details of the so-called split hit the Internet, fans were frantic. Could this be the end of SS501? Are they falling under the five-year curse? After the split, leader Kim Hyun Joong made an official statement that basically said that SS501 would never really split up. The members were just going to pursue their own individual activities. He guaranteed that SS501 would reunite someday and would continue to release its music. This small sliver of hope is something that SS501 fans still hold onto fervently even now.

SS501 solidified their place as my ultimate group bias many years ago and, to this day, no group has ever been able to replace them. Before SS501 debuted in 2005, I was on a Korean Indie group kick and had turned my focus away from mainstream Kpop, so-to-speak. I got the news that a new five-man group would be debuting under DSP Entertainment when a close friend from Japan sent me a few of the latest promotional shots of the group’s members. As I nonchalantly glanced through the six photos, I suddenly stopped when it came to one of the individual member shots. It wasn’t the subject’s stunning good looks or bright smile that caught my attention, it was his eyes.

They didn’t sparkle. They didn’t shine. They looked lost and sad. It was strange that a photo would look that way, isn’t it? It’s especially when you are talking about a group’s promotional shots that are supposed to grab the Kpop world’s attention. Perhaps it was just my imagination, or how I perceived the feel of the shot, but it struck a chord in me to the point that I followed SS501 activities from then on.

Looking back on how I found the group and how I felt about them before I ever once heard them sing, I tried to understand why I was so fascinated by them. Still to this day, I can’t really put my finger on the exact reason why this group spoke to me initially. When they finally debuted, in June of 2005, their first track,Warning, shattered my ideas of their vocal abilities and music style, and consequently, blew me away. After that, I found myself literally loving every song they released–which is rare since I’m normally overly-critical when it comes to music styles, lyrics, and arrangements. Perhaps it was their vocals that really spoke to me, or perhaps it all boils down to that one photo. I may never really know.

Since the split, members Heo Young Saeng, Kim Hyung Joon, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Kyu Jong, and Park Jung Min, have continued to produce music as solo artists, and up until the middle of last year, fans were still adamantly looking forward to the promised comeback. Then, in July 2012, it was announced that member Kim Kyu Jong would begin his military service. This surprised the fans simply because, up until the announcement, it was common knowledge that he had been exempt from service because of a medical condition. The corresponding policy that exempted him from service had been revamped, and his exemption had been lifted. The whole situation felt like a train derailment to all of the group’s fans. Their hopes were quickly dashed with this one event, and the reunification of SS501 looked even more unlikely.

However, even through everything the fans have endured since the split in 2010, leader Kim Hyun Joong has still been quite adamant that there will be a reunification and a comeback of SS501. Even though the comeback will have to be delayed for two years due to Kyu Jong’s enlistment, the possibility of a comeback is still obtainable.

The plight of SS501 reminds fans that there are no true ‘definites’ in this world. Where there is a will, there is a way. Hope is as precious as it is fragile, and still we cling to it with all our might. While our hope of SS501′s reunification maybe hindered by the realities of this world, having hope brings us almost the same amount of joy as the actual fulfillment of it. This life lesson is the most loved lesson I’ve learned during my Kpop life. We hang our many hopes on our beloved artist and genre and make the choice to do all that we can to see them realized.

After he finished singing Lucky Guy, "this song really cheers you up, i just felt that Lucky Guy is the most attractive song? “ and he watched the board holding by fans to ask him to sing “Let's Party“, he said “it's good to sing it after Lucky Guy.“

So funny that he asked the hotel staff to make (fold) a paper plane. The hotel staff took 2hours to complete that!!! He said “it's true that this paper plain flys to the 2nd n 3rd floor if you at the 1st floor blow, n if you at the 2nd floor blow, it flys to 3rd floor. I won't say it flys to 4th floor because it's gonna be a lie." kekeke

So he let us to practice the call, “i'm your woman“ when he sings “i'm your man“. So cute hyun joong, he remind fans not to forget to fly paper plain after fans sing “i'm your woman“ hahaha~

He sang "Please" and suddenly his pants ripped!

"Next song is the song you all like! (Then fans screamed “Love Like This“). He said "it's the last song, should I sing that now?"

So after he sang PBNTM, he sang LLT? Then he said, “So far this song really cheers you up. If i knew that, i would have added more 2, 3 songs to cheer you up.“ Then fans screamed “Play that!“, but he said “i've not prepared so i can't.“ kekekeke

After he finishes the concert at Sendai, he'll go back to Korea. He said “i'm expecting that i'll be able to show you more powerful stage after that.“

oh, so he showed up from the fans seats at the anchor! He sang one song there? and went bachelor to the stage saying “i felt warm from fans at Hamamatsu. I'm moved when i sang Your Story, that's because (the venue is? ) Hamamatsu. “

oh, so he went down to the fans seats during the anchor, Lucky Guy again! And his last greeting, “arigatou gozyaimashita!“ meaning “thank you very much“.

I’m not really one for long accounts and I think I tweeted quite a bit regarding the concerts already, but just wanted to write a short note about Nagoya..

The second night concert was better than the first in terms of performance and overall atmosphere, but there was a lot more fan service in the first concert. In fact, ticket prices went up three times for arena seats after the first night — a couple of friends paid 30000 yen for 18th row seats.

Regarding the second night ..
As has happened, he forgot the second/ third lines of Heat, which was kind of funny — he looked so sheepish and laughed at himself . Especially when it started with a big impact thing ) the concerts so far have started with a video of life going as normal, prior to two planets colliding. He must have still been thinking of 2012 prophecies etc when he dreamt this up! And then everything withers, followed by new life springing from the ground. Then he comes out of this capsule in a little cloud of smoke and comes down the stairs where he starts with Heat, then usually Rize up. He had on a scarf, sleeveless tank top and some kind of cardigan as you can see from murdererq’s photos. The left shoulder kept slipping off…. I guess everyone was secretly hoping it was going to come off completely! :p

Not going to go through song list as I can’t really remember it and anyway has been written a few times. First row seats really were lucky; they were close enough to almost reach out to him. I hear the next venue is even smaller! Wish I could go to that too…. Actually I guess I could have but have to save leave for the rest of his schedule this year

There was a fangirl dressed in playboy bunny type gear with two rabbit ears and white gloves who stood at second row on lower balcony. Apparently she spent the entire night with her arms out shouting Saranghae haha. Some friends of mine were next to her and were really annoyed cos they couldn’t hear what he was saying as she continued to shout while he spoke. Apparently early on HJ saw her and said something like he could see a bunny up on second floor lol. And then was too embarrassed to look her way again (according to friends, anyway!) There was reduced crowd interaction the second night . I wonder if he was just scared off after being grabbed at while he wandered through the crowd the first night. At the last part during the first night he really looked as through he was fighting to get free back to stage. At any rate he did make an effort to look at the poor fans up on 2nd and third floor. During U he wanted everyone to point at presumably the one who was for you presumably ( am guessing here as didn’t really understand a lot). So all the fans pointed their light sticks at him during the U, U, U bits, while he pointed at first the arena in the first bit of the song, the second floor at the second bit etc, trying to make sure even as he did that he covered all areas, which was kind of sweet.

The fanchants as I mentioned were fantastic! For all the songs with fanchants, they came out perfectly, whether his songs or the SS501 songs. It’s been a long time since I heard the “My Girl” “My Guy” response in such unison and with such clarity. In between songs, the crowd started chanting his name, so much so he had to wait before he could speak and looked adorably embarrassed. The name chanting started with the Korean fans, I think, but the crowd took it up. And you know how he likes to hold the mile out to the audience, hoping they’ll sing? Usually it works only to a small degree, and only for his well known songs like Lucky Guy where the hey hey hey but is easy to sing. But this time the crowd actually responded during Your Story. And not just a few words, either. A significant portion of the song. He looked visibly moved to me at the end of the song.. I guess the fans really should try to learn his songs when they go to his concerts– I never realised how much it meant to him till that day. I gathered from friends and tweets later on that he had promised a little present if they could but fulfill part of his desire, and depending on how loud the crowd was. So that’s why he danced all of Please I’m sure he’d meant to dance it anyway after the first night :p — but maybe not all of it?

One of the bits I liked about the concerts were the big balloons that came floating down during Kiss kiss. After a while with enough bounces they burst into little balloons.. Great way of making a large part of the audience hold balloons! In sad i didn’t get to play volley ball with them In Nagoya on the first night some of he audience managed to get the ball on stage as it was so close, so he kicked it back! I think they tried again on the second night but failed this time so the photo with the ball in stage is almost certainly the first night .

He’s clearly still experimenting with his concerts. Without any dancing at all, I think some of his fans were disappointed. So even when he just dances a few steps, it’s like throwing meat to a starving lion or something haha. Just before he actually danced LLT he showed some of the hand gestures and the little body wave and the crowd went like berserk. He’s said it himself, somewhat wryly, quite a few times so far that LLT seems to be the most popular song at his concert. I wonder if it’s a bittersweet thing for him?

His singing definitely improved in Nagoya. He seemed (to me anyway!) a tendency to go a little offkey in Kobe and Saitama, though less in Saitama. I don’t know if it was nerves or just that he hadn’t warmed up. Plus he’s really the kind of performer that does better with a good crowd response; so if fans want a good concert they should be more responsive! I realised too, that with the new band arrangement and backup singers that it must have taken a lot of work to reorganize and coordinate the songs, so the nitty gritty of how to do it may have occupied his mind initially before it all fell into place. Even the SPs (his security people in Japan) were too busy watching the second night in Nagoya to go catch anyone filming secretly! Sadly the videos, good as they are, don’t capture the feeling of the concert the second night. I’ve been to quite a few of his performances now and this was the best overall package so far. Better than his comebacks. A friend of mine who has been to practically all performances since he went solo agreed. She wanted to record some of the concert for memory’s sake, but said the atmosphere was so electrifying she didn’t have the heart to not experience it. The balcony was literally shaking like an earthquake and I started to wonder if it might actually collapse!

He hasn’t folded a paper plane on stage since Kobe. The second night he had a little yellow plane ready which he shot off. But he turned around and started walking to the stage door which had opened behind before tW plane landed. So the plane did a little boomerang turn, skirting the first row where all hands reached out for it, before landing in the right stage where the guitarist stared at it as it landed . Later in the concert I think I remember him picking up a yellow plane and throwing it into the crowd. I don’t know if it was the same plane or not. Needless to say everyone had thrown their planes towards the stage and there were several planes lying there ). This time the plane made a sharp dip and I thought he gave a little gasp of concern because it seemed as if it might have hit someone. The murdererq’s series of photos shows his expression Although how much damage can a paper plane do after all? But it was funny anyway. I’m also reminded of Kobe where the plane he folded on stage didn’t make it very far… A few feet I think… And to add insult to injury the camera focused on the poor lonely plane lying on the ground hahaha

His encore usually consists of 4 songs, ending with U, but in Nagoya on the second night, it was changed to LLT.

A great end to my trip I guess. Feel as if I want to be there for the rest as well

After the concert, as is usual in Japan, everyone stampeded out to the carpark. Even if you don’t know where it is, you only have to follow the crowd. Generally, the SPs are there getting his ready. Saitama was difficult to guess because of multiple exits and entrances, but for he smaller venues there’s usually just one. It’s funny how well behaved the Japanese are. The security chief cane and gave some instructions to the crowd which I couldn’t understand, but the crowd all said “hai” in unison
And when the time finally arrived he told the front row to stoop down so the back could see as well, which they all obediently did. The security are usually quite strict about where you can stand, sometimes an unreasonable distance, it seems to me. So yeah, we saw him come out as you saw in my fancam, with window half opened and putting his hand out to wave.

The account ended up much longer than I anticipated! Hope you didn’t all fall asleep reading it… I guess it’s partly cos I’m in the plane with not a lot to do ! Sorry too for how messy this account is…kept adding bits I remembered

Firstly, major thanks to a certain lady, God-sent with a spare ticket when i asked for the possibility of getting a ticket.

Here’s my feel on my very first concert ever in Japan….

Part1:

the photos and the fancams posted so far are fantastic but i tell you, truly truly, they simply don’t convey the reason i got goosebumps on the 1st minute after the arena lights dimmed.

The moment the light dimmed, lightsticks lit, a sea of green within a second, the whole arena on their feet. Within the first bar of Heat, the audience cheered and even cheered even louder when hyunjoong’s voice was heard. The adrenalin rush was electrifying and in listening to his strong delivery, was certain his adrenalin had shot past the arena ceiling. i had goosebumps within that minute. and it was because of the audience, not the singer yet.

While i’ve not seen his concerts in taiwan nor korea, my guess is the japanese fans are unparalleled, unrivalled. i doubt any other country’s audience stands for two hours nonstop, wave lightsticks coordinated for two hours. It is so amazing. Which artiste having such an audio visual response won’t come back for more? It is far far far beyond gratitude. It is not the japanese fans who are lucky. It is hyunjoong who is so very lucky to have such fans.

Heat was a great kickstart to the evening. The fans rose to it like no other song though Love like This came a close second. Which surprised me later on because i never expected that the japanese fans like Love like This this major much. Anyways, back to sequence, Rize Up kept the momentum going. (haiz, i was such a coward in not giving in to my impulse to jump to that song). Save Today and I’m Yours sounds better on stage than on CD. i particularly liked the vibe in I’m Yours.

But the first rendition that gave me goosebumps was surprisingly, Because I’m Stupid. Frankly i never fancied that song. i don’t dislike it nor like it. BUT, this round, maybe because it was a fan’s request, he sang it so slow and mellow. WAH. the feeling…. i stopped waving my lightstick and held it to my heart. (indescribable)
The next round of goosebumps came with his If You’re Like Me. my all-time fave ballad by him.

Part2.

It’s amusing how much hyunjoong wants to rock the stage as a band singer but then it’s like he misses dancing to music as well. at the end of Smile, i think he was wishing us to ask him to dance a bit, and so then the three seconds of butt dance on stage right (arena left). i was delighted to see him let go a bit of dance during Do You Like That. i sorely miss watching him dance to DYLT and Lucky Guy. love the cheeky choreo to bits.

Part3:

This is just my feel, ok…. so don’t shoot me for what i say next. it seemed as though his voice buckled towards the end of I’m Your Man. and so then the next few songs sounded like he was struggling to keep it together. which was a pity because i had looked forward to hearing my all-time dance fave, PBNTM. i had liked how the original angst matched the original sharp moves. i liked even better the jazzy version which he did in the goodbye concert for Playful Kiss. i miss the necktie dance part and the rap that went with it. Anyways, the start of PBNTM was soft and i liked it. but then soon he went back to the original angst. The rap part potentially sounds good. probably a few more concerts later he would have nailed it.
Part4

The video break was good. When he came back, voice rested, with Love like This, the fans’ response of loud cheers was a second adrenalin rush.
but it was not Love like This but LMBTO that got me missing SS501′s harmonising. it really made them five as one. i miss the way their voices gelled.

Encore

i was glad to hear Your Story sung again, this time with his strength back. i love the vibe he gives… ‘i’m saying goodbye but i’m not letting you go.’ Which, when followed by hyper interactive U, made him a Badass Uzoosin. He left us high and dry. Hyunjoong left the stage saying ‘thank you’ continuously as though he was apologising he had a train to catch.
